Day 4

Subject: Improving your EI can make you a better leader, [firstname]

Hi [firstname],

It's no secret that leaders – in business, government and life generally – often find themselves in stressful situations. Yet the leaders who possess the highest levels of emotional intelligence (EI) are much more able to survive and thrive in these situations than those at the lower end of the scale.

Let's face it: We've all been in the presence of somebody who is in charge (either at work or school) but not able to manage his/her own emotions. They may be prone to behaviors such as yelling, blaming, bullying and being passive aggressive. This can create a stressful environment where workers are always walking on eggshells fearing the next outburst.

On the other hand, have you noticed that when the boss has a high level of EI, things seem to run smoothly? It's not a coincidence.

When a leader is emotionally intelligent they have the ability to address situations that could be fraught with emotion. Most leaders deal with conflict, but a leader who is clued into others’ emotions can recognize that conflict and deal effectively with its resolution.

Being emotionally intelligent can also aid collaboration. When a leader has his/her own emotions under control, employees won't feel nervous about contributing their ideas, because they know they'll get a fair hearing. When they're not having to constantly “watch their backs”, employees feel comfortable to take calculated risks and to voice their opinions. In these situations, working collaboratively doesn't just stay as a goal; it gets woven into the organizational culture.

Sometimes leaders have to act as change agents, and if they are aware of how others will react emotionally to changes, they can anticipate this and plan the most appropriate ways to introduce and carry out the change.

Finally, leaders with high level of EI can be manipulative – but in a good way. They know how to leverage individuals emotions for the greater good. They can fire up peoples' passions for getting the job done and help people take ownership for (and pride in) their work.

Warmly,

[Your Name]
